KAARINA KAIKKONEN | NATURA/UTOPIA

Curated by Marco Tonelli | Palazzo Baldeschi, Perugia
We are happy to share the partecipation of Kaarina Kaikkonen in the group show Natura/Utopia. L'arte tra ecologia, riuso e futuro curated by Marco Tonelli.

The inspiration for this exploration is the legendary republic of Utopia as imagined in the 16th century by the English humanist Thomas More in his story of the same name. Utopia features a land that is connected to reality but also independent from it - not a mirage but a world that could exist. Similarly, contemporary art is a sort of happy island where everything is sustainable because it enrichens the world, both in terms of form and ideas.
Indeed, art's role is not to solve problems but to represent them in its own way, re-imagining them in a specific context in which anything is possible, according to the rules of the language of formal elements, aesthetic thought, and the concept of artistic creativity.
In the exhibition, art therefore serves as a trigger for reflection on issues relating to ecology, the relationship between man and nature, sustainability, reuse of materials, and redesigning human living spaces in relation to the natural environment. To this end, 13 leading artists from the Italian and European cultural scene, the United States, and non-European contexts (including Cameroon and Mozambique) have been selected. Since the 1960s these artists have made the concept of utopia, recycling, design and nature the basis of their artistic language, each in his/her own particular way - as demonstrated by the artworks chosen for the exhibition which are made from both traditional materials as well as unexpected and innovative ones.
