MARTA ROBERTI | INFINITA INFANZIA

We are delighted to share the partecipation of Marta Roberti in the group show Infinita Infanzia, curated by Saverio Verini.

 

The exhibition project is inspired by the essay La stagione fatata, written by Verini and published by the publishing house Castelvecchi. Starting from the book, the exhibition, hosted in Palazzo Collicola in Spoleto, expands the research on the theme of childhood through numerous works by contemporary artists recognized internationally, including authors not mentioned in the publication, thus giving the exhibition an autonomous character. The exhibition aims to show how childhood is not simply a golden age, but a phase of life full of facets, between discovery and trauma, play and disobedience, carefree and anxiety.

 

In this occasione Marta Roberti presents the work Autoritratto come Pinocchio.

The self-portrait is a genre that Marta Roberti frequently explores, and the use of materials such as fine papers from the Far East often recurs in her work. Both of these features can be found in Autoritratto come Pinocchio, a work created specifically for the exhibition. Presenting herself in the guise of a contemporary female Pinocchio, Roberti pays an unconventional homage to Carlo Collodi's character. The artist crouches naked with a cap on her head, while maintaining some of the typical attributes of Pinocchio, in the form of the elongated nose, the cricket perched on her shoulder and a wooden skin. Marta Roberti thus proclaims herself a "liar", thereby referring to the artist's primeval role as an inventor, an illusionist, a deceiver, but also a childish being, who adopts play and discovery as the means or tools for establishing a relationship with the world.
